The Functional Art Method

Real preserved nature art isn't about forcing nature into a mold. It's about listening to the material and letting its own form decide what it should do. Every piece ends up useful and still stands on its own as a sculpture.

The problem with preconceived design

Most nature-inspired work starts with a design and then hunts for materials to fit it. The natural parts end up secondary, or worse, cut down to suit a rigid idea. Nature already did the first round of design work — my job is to reveal it, not overrule it.

The method, step by step

Step 1 — Sourcing with intent

I look for elements with distinct character: the patterning of sea urchin spines, the curve of a cedar twig, the weathering on driftwood. Where the material comes from matters as much as how it looks — each piece is chosen for its story and for what it quietly suggests it could do.

Step 2 — Discovering the inherent function

Then I sit with it. The function has to complement the shape, not fight it. A curved cedar twig might turn out to be the perfect support for a hanging incense holder, its form cradling the function without a single alteration.

Step 3 — Crafting uniqueness

Once the form has named its purpose, the building starts. Even when the idea repeats — say, another incense holder — the execution never does, because the material never repeats. Everything is made by hand, so the finished piece reflects the exact character of what it was built from.

The result: art that lives with you

A sea urchin spine becomes an elegant ring holder. A length of driftwood becomes a key rack. These aren't just objects — they're daily reminders of something beautiful, folded into the ordinary. It's the whole reason I believe art should do more than decorate.
